Sand Mountain Melungeon Families
Sand Mountain is a flat-topped extension of the Cumberland Plateau stretching over a hundred miles along the Tennessee River in the states of Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama. Its twin, Lookout Mountain, lies across the valley, where Interstate 59 runs from Chattanooga, Tenn. to Fort Payne and Boaz, Alabama, near Blountsville. I read with great interest the treatise on the Sand Mt. Melungeons. Of particular interest is the intermarriage of the Burkes and Hatfields. I have not come across this before in my genealogy work but there is a tribe of Hatfield cousins in the Rainsville/Fyffe area. I must contact them again and see what they know.
My paternal grandmother was an Oyler/Curtis from Marion Co.,TN. She always talked of the "Black Dutch" in her lineage. Now I wonder if this is Melungeon.
Also of interest is the name "Gaines Cooper" who was tied in with the Blevins'. Many years ago there was a Gaines Blevins who lived in the Byrds Chapel/Deerhead Cove area. In that same area in a place called Gaines Steele Hollow.
