Sand Mountain Melungeon Families

Sand Mountain is a flat-topped extension of the Cumberland Plateau stretching over a hundred miles along the Tennessee River in the states of Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama. Its twin, Lookout Mountain, lies across the valley, where Interstate 59 runs from Chattanooga, Tenn. to Fort Payne and Boaz, Alabama, near Blountsville. In ancient times, a mixture of Cherokee, Yuchi, Koasati, Creek and other Indian tribes inhabited the area, and the Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto visited its towns in 1539/1540 (see map)...more

Obituary

Mrs. Allie Haymon, 95, of Powell passed away on Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006, at her residence. She was born Allie Gertrude Wigley the daughter of Emmette Young Wigley of Georgia and Dora Graves.

Services were held Monday, Dec. 18, from the Straight Creek Church of God. Burial followed in the Straight Creek Cemetery.

Survivors: daughters, Helen Fossett of Section, Gladys Galloway of Rainsville, Rheanetta Heard of Sylvania, and Carolyn Croft and Patsy Harris, both of Fyffe; sons, Ted Haymon, Rev. Gary Haymon and Danny Haymon, all of Fyffe, and Jimmy Haymon of Rainsville; brothers, Calvin Wigley of Ringgold, Ga., and Robbie Wigley and Ardean Wigley, both of Rainsville; sister, Beatrice Woods of Fyffe; 21 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Haymon was a member of Straight Creek Church of God. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl "Buck" Haymon; and sons, Don Haymon and Aubrey Haymon.

Culpeper Archive

Two brothers from Cherokee County, Josiah B. Culpepper (a Methodist preacher) and Joel Mathias Culpepper, sons of John Tyler Culpepper, had moved across the border from Cherokee County to DeKalb County by 1880. Most of the modern Culpeppers in DeKalb appear to be descended from them...(more)

Granny Dollar

Nancy Emmaline Callahan Dollar, who came to be known as “Granny Dollar,” is buried beside her husband in Little River Cemetery. On her tombstone are the dates “1826-1931.” She died January 29, 1931, but her birth date is uncertain. There is no doubt that she was what is known as “a character.” (more)

The Jesse Baxter Family

RAINSVILLE—A small crowd gathered together at the Tom Bevill Enrichment Center Monday evening to celebrate Rainsville’s 50th year.

All along the center were old pictures of the city and its leaders throughout the years. There was also a slide show as well.

Daniel Craze, of Valley Head served in Company C of the 1st Alabama and Tennessee Vidette Cavalry. He was born in DeKalb Co. Alabama, and is listed in the 1860 DeKalb Co. census as the minor child of James Craze. He has mustered in as a private on September 19th 1863 at Stevenson Alabama (at age 21). He was mustered out on June 16th 1864 at Stevenson Alabama as a private. He was mustered in along with his father James Craze (who died in a hospital in Stevenson during the war) and an uncle John Craze (who survived the war). Daniel is buried at Mountain Home Cemetery near Ider AL. For more information of the Vidette Cavalry, click here.

Marriages of C. G. "Tobe" Keith of Valley Head



Tobe Keith b. June 4, 1852 at Whitehall, DeKalb County, Alabama married Mary Louise White, daughter of William H. White and Margarett Jane Todd on November 5, 1874 at Whitehall. He was a Minister of the Gospel and was responsible for baptizing a great number of new Christians and marrying at least 66 couples between 1890 and 1925. Company B, 49th Alabama Infantry Regiment "The DeKalb Rifles"


The Regiment was originally mustered into service at Camp Lookout near Chattanooga, Tennessee as the 31st (Hale's) Alabama Infantry Regiment, but its designation was changed in the spring of 1862. It was also called the 52nd Alabama Regiment. The 49th Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Nashville, in January 1862 with men from Blount, Colbert, DeKalb, Jackson, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Marshall, and Morgan counties.
